Timber Supplies for Every Build
Not all timber works for every job, and using the wrong type can cost you time, money and compliance. That’s why it’s worth understanding what you're working with. For outdoor jobs like fences, decks and garden beds, treated pine is the go-to — usually H3 for above ground or H4 for in-ground use.
For structural framing, we keep a range of MGP10 and MGP12 timbers to suit different load requirements. Looking to finish off with something clean? We also carry DAR (dressed all round) options for smoother surfaces. And if you’re not sure which grade or treatment rating you need, just ask.
It’s easy to over- or under-spec materials, especially with new builds or council jobs. Having a team who can help you pick the right piece saves you the hassle later. Stock rotates often, so check in for current lengths and sizes before you roll up.
What does H3 or H4 mean in treated timber?
These are hazard treatment levels that show how resistant the timber is to decay and pests. H3 is treated for above-ground outdoor use and resists moisture, mould and insects, and is great for decks, rails or cladding.
H4 is stronger again and rated for in-ground use like fence posts or retaining walls. Using the wrong treatment level can lead to early rotting or termite damage, so it's important to match the rating to the job.
What timber should I use for framing a house?
For structural framing, most builders use machine-graded pine, typically MGP10 or MGP12. These ratings refer to the strength and stiffness of the timber and are required under the building code.
MGP10 is fine for standard frames, while MGP12 suits heavier loads or multi-storey builds. All structural timber should be marked with grade stamps and used according to span tables and certified plans.
Can I use untreated timber outside if I paint it?
Painting untreated timber does help, but it won’t offer the same protection as proper treatment. Moisture and insects can still find their way in through nail holes, joins or areas where paint wears off.
If the timber will be exposed to the elements, especially rain or soil contact, it’s best to use H3 or H4 treated timber. Paint works well as a finish, not as your only defence.
